Pelagic Ecosystems

چکیده
T he measurement of primary production in the ocean is key to our estimates of ecosystem function and the role of the ocean and its biota in the planetary carbon (C) cycle. Accurate estimates are critical to a broad suite ofbiological questions across a wide range of space and time scales. The methods developed to measure primary production reflect the diversity of our research interests and encompass a range of approaches: from in situ to airborne and spaceborne observations, from intracellular to global systems, and from experimental to modeling. A variable of interest in quantifying primary productivity is the rate of population increase within a pelagic community (McCormick et al. 1996). Growth rate (Il [rl]) can be expressed as the rate of change in the number of individuals (n) per unit time (t) or as a chemical constituent (C, nitrogen [N], etc.) within the community,

Longer Food Chains in Pelagic Ecosystems: Trophic Energetics of Animal Body Size and Metabolic Efficiency.
Factors constraining the structure of food webs can be investigated by comparing classes of ecosystems. We find that pelagic ecosystems, those based on one-celled primary producers, have longer food chains than terrestrial ecosystems. Yet pelagic ecosystems have lower primary productivity, contrary to the hypothesis that greater energy flows permit higher trophic levels. We hypothesize that lon...

متن کاملLinking the bottom to the top in aquatic ecosystems: mechanisms and stressors of benthic-pelagic coupling
Linkages between benthic and pelagic habitats occur in both freshwater and marine systems across multiple spatial and temporal scales, and are influenced by a number of chemical, biological, and physical forces. We identified three major mechanisms of benthic-pelagic coupling: (1) organism movement, (2) trophic interactions, and (3) biogeochemical cycling. We also explore the implications of se...
متن کاملUnderstanding the structure and functioning of polar pelagic ecosystems to predict the impacts of change
The determinants of the structure, functioning and resilience of pelagic ecosystems across most of the polar regions are not well known. Improved understanding is essential for assessing the value of biodiversity and predicting the effects of change (including in biodiversity) on these ecosystems and the services they maintain. Here we focus on the trophic interactions that underpin ecosystem s...
متن کاملAccommodating Dynamic Oceanographic Processes and Pelagic Biodiversity in Marine Conservation Planning
Pelagic ecosystems support a significant and vital component of the ocean's productivity and biodiversity. They are also heavily exploited and, as a result, are the focus of numerous spatial planning initiatives. Over the past decade, there has been increasing enthusiasm for protected areas as a tool for pelagic conservation, however, few have been implemented. Here we demonstrate an approach t...
متن کاملGlobal Patterns of Bacterial Beta-Diversity in Seafloor and Seawater Ecosystems
BACKGROUND Marine microbial communities have been essential contributors to global biomass, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity since the early history of Earth, but so far their community distribution patterns remain unknown in most marine ecosystems. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS The synthesis of 9.6 million bacterial V6-rRNA amplicons for 509 samples that span the global ocean's surface to...
